taking my fitness to the next level

Going off the beaten path, I immersed myself in one of the most intense personal trainer certification programs administered by the American College of Sports Medicine. It was a crash course in biology, kinesiology, biomechanics, anatomy and exercise prescription. Nearly ten months later I earned my certification and started my journey as an in-home fitness coach.

in motion with philly girls

I wanted to make an impact in my community with my newly acquired skills as a personal trainer. I learned about a new non-profit that was supplementing Philly underserved neighborhoods and schools with physical fitness education and programming. I joined the director of Philly Girls in Motion as she established a curriculum at Girard College in the Fairmount section of the city. We worked with girls (age 12-14) twice a week to provide structured physical activity and nutrition guidance.

coming together for a woman's wellness

Catching up on some supplemental reading one day, this article delivered a sobering reality check. Without hesitating, I reached out to the journalist to offer my help to the woman profiled in the story. A week later, I met with her mentor to discuss how I could get involved. Two weeks later, I was meeting with three other women who also raised their hands to provide nutritional, financial and educational guidance to nourish the young lady’s well being. I was anointed as her fitness coach.

congregating for good health

It became evident, after working with the woman and the minister in this article, that one’s environment is key to her or his wellness. Soon the minister and I were planning “La Vida Buena” or “The Good Life” – West Kensington’s first health fair. We engaged local businesses, health-oriented non-profits, and medical professionals to educate neighbors while showcasing their goods and services. More than 350 people converged on Philadelphia’s Norris Square Park to get acquainted with a healthier lifestyle.
